St Paul’s is hosting an alumni basketball game this Friday night at the Gene Bennett Sports Complex. Tip off is set for six o’clock. A number of former Wolves basketball players will be returning to the St. Paul’s campus for the alumni game. According to St. Paul’s head basketball coach Phil Williams the school has broken ground for construction of the Wolves’ new basketball gymnasium, which is expected to be completed by this September. I spoke with coach Williams reference tomorrow’s initial alumni basketball game. He said, “I have been wanting to have an alumni game for a number of years and I was finally able to pull the trigger this year. Trip Keller, a 2007 St. Paul’s graduate and former basketball player, has been instrumental in helping get the game off the ground. There seems to be lots of interest so hopefully we’ll have a decent crowd despite the chilly weather,” said Williams.
Keller said at least 16 former Wolves’ players have committed to playing in the first annual alumni basketball game. Keller said after speaking with coach Williams he wanted to get involved with trying to spread the word reference St. Paul’s basketball and the construction of their new gym. Keller said, “Myself and some former players thought it would be a great way to build up some interest.” Keller went on to say he feels the game will be very competitive and was looking forward to it. Preston Hammons, the “Voice of the Wolves,” will be on hand tomorrow night lending his talent in support of the inaugural alumni basketball game. I’m just curious whether stamina will be an issue for some of the former Wolves’ players. More importantly, hopefully the teams will have strength in numbers and deep benches to share the possible “grueling” minutes. Join Preston Hammons and I for tomorrow night’s St. Paul’s inaugural alumni basketball game with a 6 o’clock tip off in the Gene Bennett Sports Complex.
