St. Paul’s soccer, the defending Division I state champion Wolves, remained unbeaten last night trimming Hammond 3-0 in the district opener for both schools. St. Paul’s (19-0-2) was stymied in a scoreless first half. St. Paul’s coach Sean Moser said it was mainly due to excellent goal keeping from Tornadoes’ junior goalie Cole Stewart, who probably posted 10 first half saves and finished with about 20 saves on the chilly night. St. Paul’s cranked up its offense early in the second half with Austin Groeneveld finding the range seven minutes into the second stanza. Five minutes later, Colin Ross did the honors connecting on a header for a Wolves’ 2-0 advantage. Groeneveld capped off the Wolves’ scoring converting on a penalty kick. Austin Wiles delivered an assist for St. Paul’s. Hammond slips to 8-4-1 following their district opening loss and returns to action taking on the Slidell Tigers. SPS Soccer t shirt
