Salmen Lady Spartans senior basketball player Kalani Brown was named the Greater New Orleans Amateur Athlete of the month for January. The monthly award-winners are chosen in voting by the Greater New Orleans Sports Award Selection Committee, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, which has been recognizing student-athletes
monthly since 1958.
Brown, a 6-6 forward/center, helped lead Salmen to a 9-0 record during the month of January. The Lady Spartans run included their successful defense of the championship in the Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Classic. Brown averaged 27.3 points per game during the month, including four 30-point outings. Brown earned MVP honors at the Sugar Bowl Tournament. Brown led the Lady Spartans to two wins on the final day scoring 49 points with 32 rebounds in the two victories over Destrehan and Warren Easton to repeat as champions. Brown, who was selected as the Greater New Orleans Female Amateur Athlete of the Year for 2013-14 will play basketball for Baylor University.
Brown and her Lady Spartans’ teammates, the two-time defending Class 4A state champions, open this year’s playoffs as a No. 2 seed, hosting No. 31 Belaire.
