The Louisiana High School Athletic Association boys’ basketball state playoff brackets were released yesterday. In Class 4A, the Salmen Spartans (25-5), coached by Jay Carlin, a member of the 800-win club, enter the playoffs as the No. 1 seed. Salmen (25-5), the District 8-4A champion, opens the action, hosting No. 32 Bastrop.
In Class 5A, two teams advance to this week’s opening round. Mandeville’s Skippers (22-9), winners of their second consecutive District 6-5A crown, enter as the No. 15 seed, hosting No. 18 Jesuit Blue Jays. Mandeville, which finished the district season tied with St. Paul’s at 12-2, captured a playoff seeding contest Friday night at home, trimming the Wolves 59-51 sparked by Ethan Turner’s 20 points, hitting on five 3-pointers.
St. Paul’s (22-9) coached by Phil Williams secured the No. 16 seed, and will also host a first round game with No. 17 McKinley coming to town.
In Class 2-A, the Archbishop Hannan Hawks (22-6) begin the playoffs, seeded No. 9. The Hawks, coached by Michael Senna, battle No. 24 Vinton this Friday night at 7. Archbishop Hannan edged Mt. Hermon 55-53 in a playoff seeding game Friday to grab the District 8-2A crown. Hawks’ senior Daniel Hollander made the difference delivering a 19-point performance, clicking on two 3-pointers. Noah Griffin chipped in with 11 points followed by Patrick Bossetta and Nick Daniel with seven each. Matt Bennett added six for the Hawks. Mt. Hermon’s Jessie Pouncey poured in a game-high 31 points to lead the Yellow Jackets. Hannan held a 32-30 halftime advantage, outscoring Mt. Hermon 15-11 in the final period to secure the closely contested victory.
Fellow District 8-2A member, St. Thomas Aquinas Falcons are a No. 15 seed, hosting No. 18 Pickering.
In Class C, the First Baptist Christian School Eagles, begin playoff action this week as a No. 28 seed, traveling to No. 5 Johnson Bayou.
