It was a special day for St. Tammany Parish soccer Saturday in the LHSAA Division I boys’ and girls’ state soccer playoffs as the St. Scholastica Academy Doves and the St. Paul’s Wolves continued their reign as the best in the state grabbing their second consecutive state crowns in action at Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans.
In the opening championship game, SSA, the No. 2 seed, dispatched No. 1 seed Mt. Carmel 3-1 behind a superb effort from senior Courtney Robicheaux, who was named the Outstanding Player after scoring two goals and assisting on one to spark the Doves’ championship effort. Robicheaux, who I nicknamed the “Energizer Bunny,” shared her thoughts on her team’s second championship. “Everyone gave it their all and I think that is why the outcome was what it was. Everyone stepped on the field and played like they knew how to play and that is why we won,” Robicheaux said.
Robicheaux talked about being a state champion. “The best feeling in the world. It really is. I am on cloud nine,” Robicheaux said.
SSA finishes the year 21-1-3. Doves’ head coach Mike Ortner talked about his team’s outstanding effort. “It’s tremendous. Getting their last year only made us want to get back again this year. We had another group of great seniors. A great group,” Ortner said.
Coach Ortner and members of the state champion “high-flying” Doves will be joining me this Thursday night on Northshore Sports, originating from our title sponsor, Mellow Mushroom, located on Highway 190 here in Covington. Northshore Sports airs from 7-8 pm.
