Lady Spartans and Spartans Both Advance
In Class 4A girls’ playoff basketball action, the two-time defending state champion Salmen Lady Spartans (26-4) survived a major challenge Saturday trimming No. 7 Rayne 51-48 in the LHSAA quarterfinals at home. Salmen’s sensational senior Kalani Brown, who became the Lady Spartans’ all-time scoring leader with 2,346 points continued her dominance delivering another quality double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Brown, who will attend Baylor University, also blocked six shots and added two assists. Brown and her Lady Spartans’ teammates head to the Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Girls’ Top 28 at Burton Coliseum in Lake Charles. Salmen, the No. 2 seed, squares off with No. 3 Edna Karr Thursday at 2:45. Karr knocked off No. 11 Breaux Bridge 52-41 in the quarterfinals to advance. In the other semifinal bracket game, No. 1 seed Warren Easton battles No. 5 Cabrini this Thursday at 1 o’clock.
Meanwhile, the Salmen Spartans, the No. 1 seed in the boys’ Class 4A bracket, were on point Friday night at home, downing No. 32 Bastrop 84-41 in the opening round. Salmen (26-5) advances to the regional round, traveling to No. 17 Neville, which slipped past No. 16 Lutcher 70-62 on the road to advance.
