Salmen Spartans Take on McDonogh #35
The No. 1 seed Salmen Spartans basketball team coached by Jay Carlin, a member of the 800-win coaching fraternity, is in Lakes Charles tonight. The Spartans (28-5) are poised and ready according to their coach as they prepare to do battle with No. 12 seed McDonogh #35 in the Class 4A state semifinals.
Salmen is coming off a 58-38 quarterfinal victory over No. 9 seed A. J. Ellender, while. McDonogh #35 defeated No. 4 Plaquemine 39-34 to advance to tonight’s semifinal round contest scheduled for an 8 o’clock tip off.
No. 6 seed Landry-Walker captured the other semifinal game last night, slipping past No. 10 seed St. Michael The Archangle 62-53, and will face the winner of tonight’s Salmen-McDonogh #35 semifinal contest. The Class 4A state championship game is set for Saturday at 8 p.m.
Coach Carlin said his players are obviously excited about their opportunity appearing in tonight’s semifinal game. “The team has had a great playoff run to this point. They have been able to handle the pressure and make shots. We have to continue to do a good job on the boards and score the basketball,” Carlin said.
“We have put together a pretty good stretch and we’ve had a great week of practice. The kids are confident and focused,” added Carlin. Carlin said McDonogh 35 plays a tough schedule and they are a battle tested team.
