The Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 4A All-State Basketball Teams have been announced and accolades continue to pour in for Salmen High School’s Kalani Brown as she was selected as the Class 4A Outstanding Player. Brown averaged 23 points per game leading the Lady Spartans to a state runner up spot after Salmen had won two consecutive Class 4A state titles. Warren Easton’s Darius Mimms was named the 4A Coach of the Year, who led his club to this year’s title edging Salmen 46-42, despite Brown scoring 30 of her team’s 42-points and pulling down 23 rebounds being named the championship game MVP.
Brown’s teammate Tiara Warren received Honorable Mention for her solid contributions to the Lady Spartans. Brown, who will attend Baylor on a basketball scholarship, participated in the annual McDonald’s Girls All-American Basketball game Tuesday night in Chicago performing at the United Center, the home of the NBA’s Chicago Bulls. Brown, a member of the West squad, finished with six points, five rebounds, a block along with an assist playing 21 minutes. Brown’s West squad battled but came up short falling to the East 89-87. Brown the No. 11 ranked player in ESPN’s HoopGurlz list, is only the fourth girls’ McDonald’s All-American from Louisiana.
The Louisiana Sports Writers Association Boys Class 4A All-State Basketball Team also had a Salmen flavor with the Spartans’ head coach Jay Carlin being named the Coach of the Year after leading his club to a 29-6 mark along with a state runner up finish being edged by Landry-Walker 37-35 in the championship game. Spartans’ senior Chris Vickers, a smooth six-foot-six-inch forward, averaged 17 points per game, was named to the Second-Team after helping the Spartans to their runner up finish. Landry-Walker’s Lamar Peters garnered the Outstanding Player Award leading his Chargin’ Bucs to the Class 4A state title over the Spartans.
