SSA Rolls to State Championship
Roll it and mark it in the state championship books! The St. Scholastica Academy Doves captured the 2015 Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA State Bowling Championship held at Acadiana Lanes in Lafayette Friday. SSA coach Pete Bertucci and the Doves returned home with the championship hardware making their fourth consecutive trip to the state bowling Final Four. The Doves turned back Central of Baton Rouge in the championship match 19-8 led by their two seniors Lauren Schneida and Sara Breaux. Breaux,a five-year bowler, rolled a personal best 208 in her last game of her high school career to go with games of 154 and 178 for a 540 series.
Schneida came through with three strikes in a row for a clutch turkey in her final three frames of her career. Schneida rolled games of 141, 150 and 177 in the championship match.
SSA coach Pete Bertucci said,” Our seniors saved their best for last and went out on a great, high note. We had great senior leadership.” Bertucci went on to say, “It was a great way for our team to finish off the season. The kids kept up their energy level throughout the championship match. They are high- character kids and worked hard to achieve the state title. Friday was their day and it culminated all of their hard work,” Bertucci added.
The Doves capped off their championship season going 16-1 avenging their only loss to Central of Baton Rouge in their first contest of the year. SSA downed Central Lafourche 23.5 to 3.5 in Friday morning’s semifinals to advance to Friday afternoon’s championship match with Central. Coach Bertucci thanked the folks over at Tangi Lanes in Hammond where the Doves practiced and participated in their regular season bowling meets. Bertucci also thanked his principal Mary Catherine Villere and his truly supportive bowling parents. Congrats to coach Bertucci and the Doves on their state bowling championship.
Coach Bertucci and the Doves will be joining me next week Thursday April 23 on Northshore Sports from Mellow Mushroom, airing from 7-8 p.m.
