Northlake Christian School’s Lady Wolverines softball team, the No. 24 seed, hung tough for five innings yesterday before falling to No. 9 Springfield 16-6. NCS eighth grader KeraGrace Watts ripped a lead off homer and starting pitcher Hannah Watts struck out the side for the Lady Wolverines. NCS (10-11) increased its lead to 5-0 plating four runs in the third inning capitalizing on a walk and three consecutive doubles by Hannah Watts, Alexis Roy and Haley Piwetz. Springfield battled back and took the lead 8-6 scoring seven runs in the bottom of the sixth after NCS’ starting pitcher Hannah Watts had to leave the game with an injury running the bases and couldn’t continue.
Springfield, a district opponent advances to the regional round and will host the winner of No. 8 seed Pope John Paul II and No. 25 Opelousas Catholic which square off this afternoon at 4 o’clock with the Lady Jags (18-10) hosting the opening round game.
St. Thomas Aquinas, the No. 3 seed, looked sharp cruising past No. 30 Runnels 15-0 to advance. STA will now host No. 14 Oak Hill, a 7-3 winner over No. 19 St. James.
