In Class 4A LHSAA baseball playoff action yesterday, the No. 13 seed Lakeshore Titans trimmed No. 20 St. Martinville 5-3 at home in the opening round. Lakeshore (15-11) advances the second round best-of-3 series, facing off with No. 4 Benton, who advanced after blanking No. 29 Rayne 10-0. Zack Bergeron went 2-for-2, drove in a run and scored once for the Titans, while Mitchell Mejia contributed two hits and knocked in a run. Lakeshore’s Collin Wilkins picked up the victory going 3 and two-third innings. Wilkins gave up three runs on six hits. Mark Nicholson finished up with a strong relief effort, giving up just one hit in three and a third scoreless innings to pick up the save. Nicholson was in command, registering seven strikeouts to help the Lakeshore Titans advance.
In Class 5A, the No. 26 seed Northshore Panthers gave up three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning following a costly two-out error and fell No. 7 Denham Springs 5-3. Northshore finishes the season 21-11 under head coach Rick Mauldin, who helped guide the Panthers to the 2009 Class 5A state championship.
In Class 2A, the No. 6 Northlake Christian School Wolverines (21-10), the District 8-2A champions, are at home this afternoon hosting No. 27 Haynes Academy. Game time is set for 4 o’clock.
No. 14 seed Archbishop Hannan’s Hawks (18-8) also open their playoffs today, hosting No. 19 Redemptorist in a 6 o’clock first pitch.
